Reports
Top Contractors reports
Edition landings for the periodic Top Contractors report. Awards use the same published score inputs as the directory. Sponsored placements never change grades.
What the Top Contractors report is
The Top Contractors report is a periodic snapshot of Northern Virginia home service contractors, starting with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work in Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fauquier. Each edition is named for its calendar quarter. The current edition is 2026 Q4, and each trade has its own chapter so you can compare like with like.
How contractors are picked
Every edition uses the same published formula (v0.9) as the county guides. The biggest single input is a license match against the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). A contractor whose license cannot be matched, or whose listing fails our entity checks, stays unscored and off the ranked list rather than getting a silent zero. The other inputs are rating, review volume, discipline flags, a working secure website, profile quality, and freshness. Each listing shows its license facts with the date they were checked.
Because each edition is a snapshot, a contractor's place can change from one quarter to the next as license records and public facts change. If a fact on a listing is wrong, use the correction link on that listing and we will recheck it against the public source.
What money cannot change
Free, Basic, and Pro listings use identical score inputs, so you cannot buy a place in the report. Sponsored slots are labeled Sponsored · Paid ad, sit apart from the organic list, and never reorder it. The optional Link your reviews add-on only displays a contractor's review profiles on the listing; it does not change a grade or award placement.
Read the current edition
Contractors named in an edition can embed the award badge from the award page. The badge links back to the edition so homeowners can see the published inputs behind it.
